The British Government’s Plan for Open Banking in Online Payments

The British government is planning to look into harnessing open banking for online payments for public services. This move would allow people to use their own banking apps directly to pay for government services, making the process more convenient and efficient.

Amanda Dahl, the deputy director of Government Digital Services, recently shared this update in a blog post. In her post, she outlined the development of digital products for GOV.UK and emphasized the government’s aim to become the preferred choice for building government digital services.

Currently, GOV.UK offers Apple Pay and Google Pay as payment options for central government digital services. However, the government plans to extend mobile wallet payments to local authority services as well. This means that individuals will be able to use their preferred mobile wallet apps to pay for charges such as the Clean Air Zone.

Dahl’s vision for the future is to enable any team in the government to deliver usable and accessible digital services, regardless of their technical skills. The integration of digital products with GOV.UK will play a crucial role in achieving this goal.
