The Rise of ChatGPT
When ChatGPT launched in November 2022, it was both celebrated and denounced in equal measure. Would our jobs be safe? Would chatbots replace humans at large? Even some of the most lauded experts in the field have issued ominous warnings about AI’s potentially negative impact.
Former Google employee Dr Geoffrey Hinton, aka the “godfather of AI” has cited the “scary” chatbots he helped create as one of the main reasons he was stepping down from his role. “I’ve come to the conclusion that the kind of intelligence we’re developing is very different from the intelligence we have,” he said. “So it’s as if you had 10,000 people and whenever one person learned something, everybody automatically knew it. And that’s how these chatbots can know so much more than any one person.”
Additionally, the government’s outgoing chief scientific advisor, Sir Patrick Vallance has warned that generative AI will have “a big impact on jobs”. “There will be jobs that can be done by AI, which can either mean a lot of people don’t have a job, or a lot of people have jobs that only a human could do,” he shared with the Commons science, innovation and technology committee in May. “In the Industrial Revolution the initial effect was a decrease in economic output as people realigned in terms of what the jobs were—and then a benefit. We need to get ahead of that.”
The Job Market and Generative AI
Additional data predicts that generative AI could impact as many as 300 million full-time jobs globally. However, not all workers are as equally vulnerable to generative AI’s ability to replace them, and women are more likely to be forced to switch jobs as a result of AI. That’s according to a recent report by McKinsey which found that women are 1.5 times more likely to be replaced as they make up the largest proportions of workers in low-wage jobs. Low-wage workers as a whole are 14 times more likely to need to change occupations than those in some of the highest-earning positions. However, the report also found that white-collar workers will be among those most affected by generative AI’s adoption in the workplace and will need to redefine their roles rather than leave them completely.
