In 2013, May Habib came across the work of Dubai-based tech executive Waseem Alshikh on machine learning techniques to summarize information. Both hailing from Middle Eastern backgrounds and facing challenges such as immigration and hacking pursuits, they became a powerful duo pioneering the rise of generative AI companies. Their startup Writer is built on large language models designed to help enterprises and employees write and edit content while adhering to company guidelines.

Unlike most generative AI models, Writer’s architecture prioritizes factual accuracy over creativity. While their models still have a chance of hallucinating, their design aims to minimize incorrect information. Realizing the importance of accuracy in professional settings, Writer targets giants like Uber, Deloitte, Spotify, and Accenture, and is the go-to choice for clients who prioritize the right wording and punctuation in their branded content.
Customization and Market Competition
Writer is valued at $155 million and competes with other generative AI startups targeting enterprise sectors. What sets it apart is the use of its own large language models and its reliance on company-specific data for better accuracy. While competitors simply resell existing AI technology, Writer controls the AI itself, ensuring better output quality.
Building for Precision
Writer’s use of encoder-decoder models ensures its response generation is accurate and inclusive in language. Although their models may be less creative compared to others like ChatGPT, they are better suited for the enterprise market where precision is crucial.
