OpenAI CEO Calls for U.S.-China Collaboration on AI Development
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has called for improved collaboration between the U.S. and China on artificial intelligence development to mitigate risk and ensure safety in its global development and rollout. Despite the fact that products of his company such as ChatGPT are not available in China, Altman has been meeting with policymakers from all over the world to advocate for AI regulations that would benefit OpenAI’s business interests. His latest appeal to China’s AI community may be due to China’s strict AI regulation and the lack of immediate business threats to OpenAI. However, U.S. lawmakers commonly use the perception of China’s advancements in AI to argue against regulation. Altman argued that regulatory intervention from governments would be critical, though he did not specify which government should take the lead.
