Proton Foundation: Pioneering Online Privacy

Proton, the Swiss-based privacy-focused technology company, celebrated a monumental milestone on June 17th, 2024. In a bold move that marks its 10th anniversary, Proton announced a groundbreaking transition to a non-profit model, establishing the Proton Foundation. This shift aims to uphold and defend online privacy in an era dominated by data-hungry corporations, setting a new standard of transparency and accountability in the tech industry.

The Evolution of Proton

Founded in 2014 by scientists from CERN, Proton has transformed from a crowdfunded project into a global privacy powerhouse. Best known for Proton Mail, the world’s largest encrypted email service, Proton now offers a suite of privacy-centric products, including Proton VPN, Proton Calendar, Proton Drive, and Proton Pass. With over 100 million accounts worldwide and a team of 500 employees, Proton has emerged as a leader in prioritizing user privacy.

Embracing Transparency and Accountability

Proton’s transition to a non-profit model underscores its commitment to transparency and accountability. Based in Switzerland, known for its stringent regulatory environment, the Proton Foundation will operate within a legally binding charter, subject to annual audits to ensure compliance with the highest standards of governance.

Maintaining Dual Structure

Proton AG, the for-profit arm of the organization, will collaborate closely with the Proton Foundation, which serves as its primary shareholder. While Proton AG will contribute 1% of its net revenues to support the Foundation’s activities, clear boundaries will be maintained to prevent conflicts of interest and ensure financial sustainability.

Looking Ahead

As Proton embarks on its next chapter as a non-profit entity, the company remains dedicated to its core mission of preserving online privacy. With a board of trustees overseeing operations and grant-giving activities, Proton is poised to expand its impact and reach new milestones in the quest for a more secure and private online ecosystem.

The Future of Online Privacy

Proton’s transformation into a non-profit organization symbolizes a shift towards a more user-centric approach in the tech industry. As Proton sets its sights on acquiring the next 100 million users, the company remains committed to upholding privacy as a fundamental right and shaping the future of the internet for the better.

Join Proton on its journey to champion online privacy and redefine the tech landscape for a more secure and transparent future.
